Trombone Mutes

Trombone mutes come in many types, including straight, cup, plunger, harmon, practice and bucket mutes. Each type has a unique sound and purpose.
Straight mute
The most common type of mute
Can be made from cardboard, aluminum, or wood
Cup mute
A straight mute with a bowl or cup at the end.
Produces a softer, more muffled sound
Often used in jazz
Can be made from fiberglass, ABS, polystyrene, aluminum, and wood
Plunger mute
A common type of mute for professional trombone players, made of rubber
Harmon mute
Also known as a "wah-wah" or "wow-wow" mute
Can be made from aluminu
Practice mute
Used to practice or warm up without disturbing others
Can be made from rubber, ebony, or metal
Bucket mute
A type of mute for brass instruments in the shape of a bucket which clips on the bell.
