Trombone Mutes

Trombone mutes come in many types, including straight, cup, plunger, harmon, practice and bucket mutes. Each type has a unique sound and purpose. 


  • Straight mute 

    • The most common type of mute

    • Can be made from cardboard, aluminum, or wood


    Cup mute 

    • A straight mute with a bowl or cup at the end.

    • Produces a softer, more muffled sound

    • Often used in jazz

    • Can be made from fiberglass, ABS, polystyrene, aluminum, and wood


    Plunger mute 

    • A common type of mute for professional trombone players, made of rubber


    Harmon mute 

    • Also known as a "wah-wah" or "wow-wow" mute

    • Can be made from aluminu


  • Practice mute 

    • Used to practice or warm up without disturbing others

    • Can be made from rubber, ebony, or metal


    Bucket mute 

    • A type of mute for brass instruments in the shape of a bucket which clips on the bell.
