The most important thing to buy before starting to learn an instrument is the instrument itself! There are lots of options available and it can be tricky to tell the difference in quality, especially when we're new to the world of brass instruments!
Some of the most reliable brands / brass instrument manufacturers include: John Packer, B and S, Yamaha and Bach. Most trombones are sold with the case and mouthpiece included.
To make choosing the right trombone as easy as possible, I've put together a collection of the best trombones on the market for beginner, intermediate and advanced trombonists.
Best trombone options for beginners:
pBone. Plastic trombone
Good for beginners up to Grade 3. Fairly strong, but not indestructible. They still need to be handled with care. pBone Instruments are designed with kids in mind. With lightweight, colourful, high-quality wind and brass instruments, kids can discover the joy of music in seconds! pBone Instruments aid brain development, sensory and fine motor skills, build confident and encourage self-expression.
Lightweight, robust, and durable. More affordable than brass instruments. Much better for the planet than brass.
John Packer JP031
As a beginner on the trombone, you will find this entry level medium bore Bb trombone perfect for you. The instrument's medium bore offers versatility with little resistance and its 8" bell gives you great sound projection.
Phil Parker series 1
With a well balanced design to help make the instrument feel comfortable for smaller hands, this is the ideal instrument for beginners and beyond. This trombone has a half inch bore (.500 bore), and comes with a compact lightweight case with rucksack straps.
Best trombone for intermediate learners (Grade 3-5):
Bach TB501
The Bach TB501 student trombone is a high-quality instrument that is purpose-built for beginners. Bach are part of Vincent Bach Instruments - the company that makes the world-famous Stradivarius trombones. So you know this trombone is built to last. Similar to professional trombones, the Bach TB501 boasts a nickel silver slide. This material will not only keep your slide silky smooth, but is also highly resistant to corrosion if untouched for a long time. And once combined with the yellow brass bell, you will realise how great the TB501 is.
To ensure that your new trombone is kept safe, the Bach TB501 includes a high-quality case. To give you the best possible start, the TB501 trombone includes a Bach 12C mouthpiece which is one of the most popular mouthpieces for learners. This pack includes everything you need to get playing straight away including a music stand by Gear4music, a Trombone stand, a maintenance care kit and a chromatic clip-on tuner.
Yamaha YSL354e
Yamaha standard trombones were designed to make it easier for beginning students to sound good…and as soon as possible. They are produced in Yamaha workshops by highly trained craftspeople with very similar specifications and manufacturing processes as Yamaha use on their top of the line models. Plus every single instrument is stringently test-played and inspected by an expert. This is why some top artists have commented that Yamaha standard models are very close to pro trombones in quality, yet are much easier for beginners to play.
Trombone recommendations for advanced trombonists (Grade 6+):
Popular makes of trombones for more advanced players makes to research are:
Bach, Conn, Rath and Yamaha
